Executive/Sr. Director, American Archive
CPB
General Description
To provide leadership and strategic direction in guiding and implementing all aspects of the American Archive, public broadcasting's comprehensive archive of valuable radio and television programming, ensuring its collection, management and preservation.
Specific Duties
1. Establishes annual operating plans with specific goals and objectives that align with and support the achievement of the American Archive vision.
2. Leads the creation and implementation of all operating processes, policies, standards and protocols for the American Archive relative to identification, prioritization and amassing digital public media content, preservation of physical assets, appropriate management of digital rights, enhancements to cataloging tools and other applications, setting documentation standards including cataloging, captioning and other asset description methods, working with the system on the growth and evolution of PBCore and related metadata models, as well as other operational and financial activities. Ensures that American Archive projects and grants are executed according to these processes and policies, and that all relevant components are performed appropriately and defined outcomes are relevant and measurable.
3. Provides leadership and support services such as technical assistance, training, and/or information resources to public broadcasting stations and producers to ensure that content is ingested into the American Archive, including 'born digital' content now and in the future.
4. Oversees the planning, execution, and application of research and development activities that informs American Archive's decision-making on protocols, management, services and outreach activities. Establishes measurable outcomes for American Archive research and development investments, monitors the performance of American Archive in achieving these outcomes, and applies this information to future decisions.
5. Directs tracking and reporting activities to reflect American Archive's progress and outcomes relative to objectives and projects, information such as financial indicators, adherence to timelines and budget, stakeholder feedback, and other relevant data. Monitors and analyzes information/data to ascertain trends, and recommends and implements changes in direction, new approaches, and/or procedures to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness, as appropriate, as well as to ensure achievement of established objectives.
6. Ensures that proper tools are in place to communicate and disseminate critical American Archive information to stakeholders and partners (internal and external to CPB), ensuring that communications are ongoing and focused to ensure the effective development of support and buy-in for American Archive initiatives, as well as the swift resolution of problems and issues that could hinder achievement of objectives or otherwise obstruct the successful operations of the American Archive.
7. Works with other senior management to communicate American Archive's strategic direction throughout the public broadcasting system, CPB, particularly with the Executive Office and, as necessary, with the CPB Board or American Archive Committee of the Board, as well as represent the American Archive to Congress, other national and digital archives, media companies, stakeholders and the American public by providing data, materials, and any other relevant information to educate, secure support, and establish a shared understanding related to the American Archive.
8. Creates effective partnerships and builds and fosters alliances with other organizations in support of American Archive objectives.
9. Conducts required/effective staff management responsibilities and ensures that all activities are performed in compliance with budget, procurement, and other CPB policies, standards, and procedures.
Other Duties
10. Participates with CPB's senior management to set the overall strategic direction of the department to include establishing policy, goals, and objectives necessary to ensure that the department achieves CPB's mission related to digital media strategy.
11. Keeps abreast of activities in the marketplace related to digital archiving, particularly those activities that may present opportunities for the American Archive to enhance its efforts in development and outreach initiatives.
12. Represents and creates awareness of CPB's efforts related to the American Archive at internal meetings, with stations and other stakeholders, at coalitions, and at public broadcasting-related events as required.
Required Qualifications
1. Masters Degree in information management, digital archiving/library sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
2. Ten years of work experience reflecting progressively responsible programmatic and administrative roles in digital archiving and asset/information management, as well as demonstrated experience with the management and implementation of large-scale digital archiving management systems.
3. Prior management experience, with demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategies and processes for achieving business objectives.
4. Demonstrated experience planning, organizing and managing multiple priorities, projects, and activities as well as critical deadlines, while being flexible to addressing and responding to changing needs.
5. Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and lead others, resolve conflicts, and ensure the achievement of results.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as advanced capabilities relative to collaboration, negotiation, persuasion, and making effective presentations.
7. A high level of confidence, integrity, can-do attitude and a hands on approach to problem-solving as well as an executive presence for interacting with and influencing key leadership and stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key relationships internal and external to CPB.
8. Critical thinking, sound judgment and problem analysis/resolution capabilities at both the strategic and operational levels.
9. Project management expertise, particularly an understanding of project planning, budgets, and financial/performance tracking.
10. Advanced proficiency with the technology associated with digital archiving and asset/information management.
Desired Qualifications
1. A related Doctorate degree.
2. Familiarity with the public broadcasting system and CPB.
Other Important Information
- This position operates under minimal supervision and minimal instruction - with the incumbent setting his/her own standards, plans and procedures for accomplishing individual objectives. Also, handles and/or provides guidance to others for handling problems and questions.
- The work environment is one with significant volume and multiple demands.
- Travel required: 15 - 25%.
- Direct budget accountability: $8 million per year

Interactions
Internal: Frequent interaction with staff throughout CPB, particularly within the Office of Business Affairs (OBA), the Executive Office, and CPB's Communications and Government Relations departments.
External: Interacts with staff at public broadcasting stations as well as producers, the public and private digital archiving community, PBS, NPR, technology providers, the education community, the academic research community, the Library of Congress and the Congress. Supervises and manages vendor relationships to ensure the execution of work deliverables in support American Archive objectives.
Hiring Range: $91,500 to $125,800 Level: 9 Exempt: Yes
