Job Description:

AZPM, the award-winning NPR/PBS member station in Tucson, Arizona, has an entry-level, part-time Broadcaster/Radio Host Assistant position available on its news and classical radio stations, KUAZ and KUAT-FM. The selected candidate will assist with audio engineering and production, audio editing, voice tracking, and host syndicated and local news and information programming and/or music programming during an assigned shift, with occasional other duties as assigned.

This position is part of a dedicated team committed to bringing quality programming with integrity to Southern Arizona. AZPM is an editorially independent, nonprofit service of the University of Arizona, and is funded through the generous support of annual and sustaining members, the business community (through program underwriting), fee-for-service production activities, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and direct and in-kind support from the University of Arizona.

  • Assist with recording and editing content for broadcast.
  • Help to introduce and announce various acquired programs and provide additional comments and information to the listening audience. May serve as a substitute host during another announcer's regularly scheduled air shift.
  • Assist and participate in on-air membership campaigns by requesting listeners to send contributions to support the radio station.
  • Assist with research, prepare interview questions, and conduct interviews.
  • Assist with writing and producing content for on-air broadcast.
  • Learn how to cue and start recorded materials; maintain proper volume levels and monitor off-air transmissions to ascertain quality of sound reproduction.
  • Help with reviewing program logs for assigned program periods and secure appropriate recordings and written materials for public informational announcements, promotional announcements, funding acknowledgments, and other programmatic material.
  • Learn how to operate broadcast control room equipment including microphones, sound mixers, audio recorders/reproducers, audio editing software, and monitors.
  • Help maintain awareness of and monitor transmitter performance parameters.
  • Assist with research, prepare interview questions, and conduct interviews.
  • Assist and represent the station occasionally at community and public events and may serve as master of ceremonies at events.
  • Learn to monitor EAS equipment and respond to announcements and events as prescribed in Emergency Alert System requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of public radio and radio broadcasting.
  • Knowledge of current local, national, and international events.
  • Knowledge of classical music.
  • Strong on-air presence consistent with NPR broadcast standards.
  • Skill in using a friendly and conversational on-air style.
  • Proficiency in operating electronic broadcasting control and production systems.
  • Clear speaking voice, with effective diction and voice modulation.
  • Ability to accurately pronounce foreign names, locations, and non-English words.
  • Effective interpersonal communication and active listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Comfort with unscripted speaking situations such as live interviews, on-air fundraising, and public event appearances.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience required.
  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and rules governing radio broadcast operations.
  • Experience in voice recording and audio editing.
