Job Description:

Arizona Public Media is looking for a Senior Reporter to join our growing newsroom. AZPM is the award-winning NPR/PBS affiliate in Tucson, Arizona. If selected, you’ll join a growing team of energetic reporters who create unique stories about the southwest for our southern Arizona radio, television, and online audiences. As the Senior Reporter, you will be an accomplished audio reporter who tells stories with sound, looks for the new and especially the local angles. High-quality work on deadlines will be essential in our multimedia environment, as will the ability to work cohesively with a team, both internally with the news and production staff members and externally with partner stations. The primary assignment of this position will be general assignment reporting by producing daily radio news spots and longer-form features. A beat can be developed based on the reporter’s professional interests. You will also work with our award-winning videographers and TV editors to contribute occasional stories to our TV programs. AZPM reporters also work to develop and air podcasts throughout the year.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research, develop, write, and produce daily news stories on relevant areas for public broadcast and digital audiences.
  • Develop longer feature stories that tell deeper, bigger stories than daily coverage can accommodate.
  • Produce high-quality work that is accurate, fair, balanced, and professional.
  • Operate field audio equipment and audio editing systems.
  • Take digital photos for all stories for web posting.
  • Adhere to AZPM’s Code of Editorial Ethics and Practices and AZPM’s Editorial Standards.
  • Meet daily deadlines.
  • Cultivate sources in relevant areas including connections to local government, businesses, and non-profits, as well as exploring the connection to these topics of state and federal laws and policies, finding local stories that illustrate how changes in these policies affect local issues.
  • Rework all broadcast stories for posting for online and social media, adding additional audio, data, links, charts, and maps as needed.
  • Substitute/back-up anchor for radio and television newscasts on as-needed basis.
  • Operate University of Arizona vehicles to travel to conduct interviews and/or capture audio.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics, and standards.
  • Thorough understanding of cross-platform (digital, audio), content production techniques, and workflows.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Familiarity with public broadcasting conversational style delivery.
  • Excellent communications skills both verbally and written. 
  • Ability to function as a team-player who also has the ability to train and mentor( students and junior staff).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual English-Spanish.
  • On-air reporter/anchor/host experience.
  • Experience with audio editing systems (e.g. Adobe Audition, Hindenberg, Audacity).
