AIR, the Association of Independents in Radio, is a global community of independent audio producers. We seek a thoughtful, strategic and dynamic leader for our small but creative and collaborative staff of four and our growing membership which today includes more than 1,500 radio and podcast producers, editors, sound designers, and engineers.
We’re looking for a leader who has a vision for what mission-driven audio, whether podcast or broadcast, should look like, and the capacity to think strategically about AIR’s role in bringing that vision into reality. Our ideal executive director will be adaptable to changing circumstances as well as a creative thinker who thrives as a part of the ideation process. The Executive Director will oversee a $1 million budget and provide leadership and oversight to AIR's programming and organizing work. We need a high-level, strategic thinker who will lead the staff and we also need a doer, who can show by example and roll up their sleeves to execute.
The ideal candidate will be excited about generating financial resources for AIR. They will be an effective fundraiser with a demonstrated track record, knowledgeable of and expert at being in the leadership role in fundraising and resource development. Our ideal leader will be comfortable being AIR’s spokesperson and understand how to build and steward relationships with institutional funders and individual donors. The new Executive Director must be able to conceptualize and communicate powerful ideas in writing and verbally to secure funding to support AIR’s mission. Our executive director will be responsible for continuing to grow our organizational fundraising capacity and for diversifying AIR’s revenue streams.

We are proud of our role in moving forward a conversation about pay equity in public radio and podcasting, and our work on rates, rights and fair practice is pivotal to that effort. AIR's programming includes New Voices and Edit Mode, two cohort-based fellowship programs designed to support storytellers from traditionally marginalized backgrounds as they move forward in their careers. Our new Executive Director will have the opportunity to strategically expand on and build the profile of these programs.

- Demonstrated experience leading real change to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.

- Experience developing and leading organizing campaigns
- Non-profit experience
- Experience working in public service media
- Experience developing and leading training and education programming
- Experience with online and remote education
- Labor movement experience
We recognize that no one candidate will have all of the additional experience described above; however, these are areas where experience or even demonstrated interest will be a real asset to AIR’s work.
Salary: Our expected range is $125,000+
Location: Currently our team is fully remote, based in the SF Bay Area, Philadelphia and Boston. This is a remote position.
