Position Summary:

Under the direction of the VP, Radio, the Director, Radio System Investments develops concepts and initiates projects related to audience development and research, infrastructure, technology, fundraising, and operations of the public radio industry. Responsible for the day-to-day administration of assigned grants from project development to close-out. Reviews and evaluates proposals, analyzes budgets, and drafts concurrence documents and work scopes in compliance with CPB’s established concurrence/contracting policies and procedures. Identifies and works to resolve issues that arise with grantees, ensuring that all deliverables and project objectives are met.


The salary for this position will be no less than $83,000 and within a hiring salary range up to $109,000. Exact salary based upon experience, education related to the role, CPB compensation structure and internal equity. Annual salary increases and bonus award based on performance against annual objectives and position responsibilities.

Work Location and Hybrid Work Environment:

CPB is conveniently located in downtown NW DC at 401 Ninth St. NW, Washington, DC, amidst easy access to all Metro lines and ample garage parking. We are a largely local workforce and value employee flexibility, when possible. This is a hybrid work position; with in person workdays at CPB’s office, along with teleworking, as approved by the position’s Department Head.

Specific Duties:

  • Assumes primary responsibility for assigned portfolio, moving projects from concept and general outline to specific contractual documents.
  • Works with CPB contracting attorneys to ensure that contracts appropriately reflect the project as approved.
  • Works with the Communications and Government Affairs Department in conjunction with high visibility grantees and/or projects.
  • Manages relationships with grantees and potential grantees including ongoing communications regarding project scope and goals, contract compliance and approval of project deliverables.
  • Anticipates problems and develops solutions working with senior management to select the best approach for resolution.
  • Assists senior management in the development and implementation of departmental business operations.
  • Develops appropriate metrics and evaluation tools for individual projects. 
  • Monitors trends and needs of the public media system; keeps abreast of priorities and activities of public media organizations to maintain an awareness of industry trends.
  • Represents the department at industry meetings, as appropriate, in an effort to foster relationships and expand awareness of CPB goals and programs within the public media system. 
  • Executes and manages Request for Proposal (RFP) processes for special projects as needed and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Seven years’ work experience in a professional level position requiring skills in project management, grants administration, budget analysis, and/or in the administrative management of media operations or programming.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop concepts and formulate projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications, writing, and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to present complex technical ideas in non-technical terms.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines, while having an attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to manage research projects and evaluate current projects for their effectiveness.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in MS Office.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and creatively.
