Job Description:

KHOL/Jackson Hole Community Radio in Jackson, Wyoming, has an immediate opening for a senior reporter/managing editor. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of an invigorated, growing public media organization in one of the most beautiful places in the country.

People are indeed drawn to Jackson Hole for the area’s scenic charm and recreational opportunities, but residents are also deeply civically engaged. Teton County voter turnout hovers around 96%, and listeners demand context, nuance and perspective when it comes to the area’s pressing issues—a historic housing crisis, the growing pains of a conservation mecca reliant on a tourism-based economy, massive economic inequality, climate change and marginalized populations fighting for a seat at the table, just to name a few.

The senior reporter/managing editor will lead KHOL’s award-winning news coverage through a combination of reporting, editing and producing creative and informative radio and digital stories. They will manage the reporting, editing and production of a daily four-minute newscast, report and edit in-depth feature stories and immersive interviews, and contribute to the production of station podcasts, including our flagship show Jackson Unpacked. The senior reporter/managing editor will also oversee and edit all stories produced by KHOL’s staff reporter and freelancers. This position is ideal for an experienced radio reporter looking to gain experience in editing and management!

Over the past few years, KHOL has grown from a nearly entirely volunteer-run music station to an affiliate of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with a staff of five. Our newsroom is small but mighty: The station was recently awarded its first-ever Regional Edward R. Murrow Award and KHOL reporters regularly file to the statewide NPR affiliate Wyoming Public Media, the NPR newscast and Rocky Mountain Community Radio (RMCR) collaborative. Our primary coverage area is western Wyoming and eastern Idaho.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit excellent leadership skills and confidently provide radio training, editing and mentorship to KHOL staff members and station freelancers
  • Manage one full-time reporter/producer
  • Exhibit excellent news judgment and ability to make sound decisions under tight deadlines to lead KHOL’s radio and digital news coverage
  • Understand, practice and enforce the principles of ethical journalism (KHOL adheres to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics)
  • Understand (or be willing to learn!) FCC laws, regulations, conventions and protocols relating to the delivery of news and public affairs content
  • Oversee the reporting, editing and production of a daily four-minute newscast
  • Report and edit in-depth feature stories and immersive interviews about local and regional news–this role requires a combination of reporting and editing
  • Review freelancer pitches, assign stories and keep track of station freelancer budget
  • Serve as the final producer on station podcasts, including KHOL’s flagship news show Jackson Unpacked
  • Produce other staff, freelancer and volunteer content (including two-way interviews and feature stories) as needed
  • Reformat radio scripts to post as web stories, including occasionally doing so for stories by other reporters in the RMCR network
  • Help run KHOL’s social media accounts (namely Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) by writing and scheduling news-related posts
  • Contact, interview and cultivate relationships with a wide array of diverse sources
  • Stay informed on local, regional, national and international news
  • Opportunity to pitch to national and regional shows as time allows

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with KHOL’s executive director to guide the sound of the station and shape programming
  • Act as a media and community liaison, representing KHOL at political forums, community events, fundraisers and more
  • Edit some non-news website content and KHOL communications, including music interviews and station newsletters
  • Participate (enthusiastically!) in KHOL’s membership drives and support station team at non-news events, including concerts and community events

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of radio reporting experience or an equivalent combination of professional and academic radio journalism  experience
  • Some radio editing experience and/or a demonstrated interest in editing
  • Fluency with Adobe Audition (which KHOL uses), ProTools or another similar audio editing software
  • Outstanding news judgment and a passion for local news
  • An ear for what makes a compelling radio story
  • Excellent radio and digital writing skills and ability to distill complex information
  • Strong on-air presence for recording narration and live interviews
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
  • Basic photography skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Spanish and English fluency
  • Familiarity with the Mountain West

The position is full-time.  Compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s prior experience. KHOL offers generous paid time off, a ski pass to Snow King Mountain Resort, a flexible schedule and workspace, as well as health benefits.

Anti-Discrimination Policy and Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

As a public radio station funded and supported by the community, KHOL knows that cultivating a diverse team of employees and volunteers is essential to understanding and serving the multifaceted communities of western Wyoming and eastern Idaho.
