We have an outstanding opportunity for a Broadcast Technician 2 to serve as a point of contact for KUOW staff and KUOW vendors to troubleshoot technical issues related to broadcasting equipment, ensure operations are compliant with Federal Communications Commission regulations, and communicate best practices related to audio and video broadcasting. Position represents KUOW with other broadcasters and the public as needed for KUOW events. The Broadcast Technician 2 position supports the setup, operation, and maintenance of equipment that regulates the signal strength, clarity, and range of sounds for studio, radio, and video broadcasts. Maintenance of the general facility environments and training and documentation of broadcast-based tools are part of the responsibilities. JOB SUCCESS SUMMARY The Broadcast Technician 2 is a multi-functional role that heavily relies on collaboration across multiple departments to problem solve and meet group goals. Success in this role requires the capacity to receive and provide communication about technical and facility-related issues, often under pressure. Broadcast Technicians will work independently and as part of a dynamic team, at times teaching new technical skills and mentoring best practices with studio equipment when needed. The ability to share knowledge about technical broadcasting techniques with transparent and effective communication skills are essential to supporting team dynamics and goals. Collaborative problem solving is critical to this role’s success including the ability to switch contexts multiple times a day. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Broadcasting Capabilities Technical Infrastructure and Broadcast Ownership (70%) • Provides technical infrastructure support for local broadcast programming: in-studio events, remote production, and live broadcasts. • Help coordinate radio production, studio, and general broadcast training with other Operations staff for personnel during transitions and regular refreshers for designated super users. • Coordinates the maintenance, repair, and modifications of the facility and its systems. This may include paint, carpentry, and the creation of custom needs for KUOW. • Participates in the Operation team's regular facility, studio and transmitter site review, maintenance, and future planning. • Manage vendors and building management regarding significant facility issues and repairs. Administrative (15%) • Assists the operations and programing team with program distribution, audio archives, satellite distribution feeds, automation templets for recorded programs, program based messaging and alert distribution. • Assists in the creation and maintenance of documentation for broadcast operations, audio production and emergency activities. • Assists in the creation and maintenance of documentation for specific facility related systems and equipment. • Participate in the review and selection along with implementation and integration of new systems across the organization. • Co-coordinates with other university departments to assist in the repair and maintenance of KUOW assets: specifically, UW Motor Pool and the University Real-Estate Department. • On site point person for facility repair and maintenance when having to deal with property owners, the Real-Estate department or KUOW vendors. Other duties as assigned (15%) • Attends and participates in department or organization meeting training. • Manage select company assets such as our UofW leased vehicle and items related to off-premises properties. • Back up other members of the operations department as needed. • Support and participation in internal station initiatives were applicable. • Write SOPs for operations processes • On call for all security and operational responsibilities including building security and access. SUCCESS PROFILE Knowledge of: • Advanced technical-level duties relating to broadcast facilities and/or broadcast distribution systems in areas of maintenance, production, operation, and programming preferred. • Technical skills related to electrical engineering repair and maintenance. • Familiarity with the technical skills related to broadcast RF engineering repair, maintenance, and design a plus. • Best practices related to broadcasting operations and maintenance of equipment and techniques • Knowledge and familiarity of Federal Communications Commission regulations and applicable State and local communication laws for all areas including a remote broadcast facility • Knowledge and familiarity of tools for the installation and maintenance of existing systems and fabrication for custom needs • Basic facility maintenance including general repair, locks, and paint. A history of vendor management for mid-sized projects is beneficial. Ability to: • Work independently and as part of a team • Work within a live to air broadcast environment, could include managing video and audio in conjunction with a live venue. • Think quickly and maintain calm under pressure while communicating with diverse levels of knowledge and styles of communication. • Flexible, solutions-oriented, responsive, and can clearly communicate to elicit information to address technical problems. • 24/7 on call with flexible working hours is expected. • Anticipate needs of a situation (back to front thinking) • Write technical guidelines and good practices for the staff Requirements include:
