This position can be based anywhere in the state of Texas with occasional travel to Austin to collaborate in-person with the Texas Standard team. As a member of the Texas Standard team, the Associate Producer/Reporter upholds and furthers KUT/KUTX’s mission to provide a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, as well as cover diverse communities around Texas and beyond. 

 

Purpose

Texas Standard is looking for an Associate Producer/Reporter to report and produce original stories and segments for Texas' premiere statewide show. The ideal candidate is passionate and curious about the forces shaping this diverse state, from the heavily-populated urban areas to rural communities, and has a talent for communicating complex ideas in terms our audience can relate to.  We value teamwork and good communication skills. The ideal candidate is open to learning new skills, as we are willing to provide training and opportunities to learn.

 

Responsibilities

  • Pitches story ideas and reports regularly as assigned. Creates, coordinates, writes and produces original news segments. Assists with daily promos and other content. Covers live events as assigned.

  • Actively participates in editorial meetings. Assists in scheduling and segment production, including writing, pre-interviewing, editing, copying and distributing schedules and scripts. Briefs the host. Books, produces and edits taped interview segments as assigned. Books on-site and remote studio time.

  • Produces web posts and assists with producing show content for other digital platforms. Works with the team to develop novel and innovative ways to present content online, on social media, and on-air.

  • Works to ensure the consistent flow of communication among the Texas Standard team and with strategic partners like the KUT Local News team and The Texas Newsroom.

  • Works with editorial staff to incorporate and review audience feedback in the program. Maintains updated contact lists and sourcing surveys.

  • Ensures that all content produced by the Texas Standard team meets KUT standards of accuracy, fairness and balance. Actively incorporates diverse perspectives and voices into the editorial process. Identifies omissions in our coverage and suggests ways to mitigate them.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.

  • 3+ years of professional experience producing content for a news organization.

  • Ability to work independently during off-hours with little supervision.

  • Strong verbal, writing, editing, and online production skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work well under pressure.

  • Solid news judgment.

  • Knowledge of AP style.

  • Familiarity with content management systems and publishing content on different digital platforms, including website and social media.

 

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience producing content for a news outlet.

  • Experience in a public radio newsroom.

  • Experience producing and editing audio, photos and video.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Audition).

  • Spanish language skills.

 

Salary Range

$50,000 + depending on qualifications

 

Working Conditions

Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Work hours: Monday-Friday, starting at 7 a.m. (8 hours/day). Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines.
