The Texas Standard (TS) is looking for a Managing Editor to lead the digital efforts of Texas' premier state daily show. The managing editor works collaboratively with other members of the team shepherding the process of creating stories on multiple platforms, including digital and audio. A connector of people and ideas, this individual has a good grasp of the issues and topics that move the state and how to best take advantage of different storytelling techniques to bring them to our audience.

Previous audio editing experience is desired but not a must. The ideal candidate is open to learning new skills, as we are willing to provide training and opportunities to learn.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assigns and edits individual stories, adhering to rigorous journalistic standards as well as consistently bringing cutting-edge storytelling to Texas Standard. Works with in-house reporters, producers, freelancers and collaborators to edit, produce and shape stories in the show's style. Manages the Texas Standard digital team.

  • Develops novel and innovative ways to present content on digital platforms and on-air, taking into account audience needs and accessibility. Produces content for program and web.

  • Actively participates in news meetings by showing up with story ideas and suggestions for coverage with an audience-centric perspective. Identifies omissions in our coverage and suggests ways to mitigate them.

  • Coaches reporters on writing, storytelling and digital skills. Helps to develop staff and assist in career growth.

  • Helps edit audio and on-air content as needed.​

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.

  • 5+ years of professional experience producing content for a news website.

  • Ability to work independently during off-hours with little supervision.

  • Strong verbal, writing, editing, and online production skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work well under pressure.

  • Solid news judgement.

  • Knowledge of AP style.

  • Familiarity with content management systems and publishing content on different digital platforms, including website and social media.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional experience producing content for a news outlet.

  • Experience in a public radio newsroom.

  • Experience managing teams and leading in the newsroom.

  • Experience producing and editing newsletters.

  • Experience producing and editing photos, video and audio elements.

  • Experience gathering and analyzing analytics.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Audition).

  • Spanish language skills.

 

Salary Range

$70,000 - $78,000 + depending on qualifications

 

Working Conditions

Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Wear appropriate office attire; accept supervision. Work hours: Monday-Friday, starting at 7 a.m. (8 hours/day). Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines.
