Summary Position Description:

The General Manager of Bethel Broadcasting, Inc. (BBI), operating as KYUK,  leads a dedicated team of professionals towards achieving the goals adopted by the Board of Directors.  The General Manager is responsible for the operational, legal, financial, technical, programming, and developmental functions of KYUK and its stations, and serves as a liaison to local, state, regional, and national organizations.

 

Summary of KYUK

We are dedicated to serving the rural Alaska and Alaska Native communities of our region and responding to issues that affect the people of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Our mission is to educate and inform as well as provide cultural enrichment, entertainment, and opportunity for public access and language maintenance for cultural survival.

Bethel Broadcasting, Inc. is a Native American initiated public broadcasting joint licensee operating public radio and television stations located in Bethel, Alaska. Bethel Broadcasting, Inc is a 501c(3) non-profit corporation licensed to do business in the State of Alaska.

 

Specific Duties

Financial Management.  The GM is responsible for budgeting and budget tracking, oversight of bookkeeping, audits, maintenance of records, grant tracking and reporting and financial reporting to the Board of Directors and granting agencies. 

Personnel Management.  The GM is responsible for guiding the work of eleven full-time, and dozen of part-time and volunteer staff in the following departments: accounting, radio, tv, news, technical, development, administration and charitable gaming;  staff hiring, training, evaluations, benefits development and administration; implementing BBI personnel policies;  maintaining all personnel files; acting as the personnel grievance officer in accordance with Personnel Policy.

Fundraising.  The GM is responsible for assuring sufficient funds are available for station operations through grant writing and reporting, maintaining relationships with granting agencies and organizations, donor development including corporate and individual giving; earned revenue including production work, licensing, and sales;  oversight of charitable gaming operations in compliance with State of Alaska regulations.

Operations. The GM has the overall responsibility for all content production; maintenance and improvement of our AM, FM  and TV broadcast, and IT, equipment and infrastructure and our online service platforms; maintenance and improvement of facilities; implementing and overseeing various service contracts; assure FCC compliance; ensuring emergency preparedness; implement BBI’s Strategic Plan.

Community Outreach . The GM represents the station to the local community and is responsible for assuring KYUK is responsive to local community needs and concerns; guiding outreach to members; guiding interaction with local businesses, organizations, schools and government agencies;  articulating KYUK’s mission, policies and strategic directions to build collaborative relationships.

BBI Board of Directors. The GM reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for providing the Board regular financial and station activity reports; providing necessary information and advice to make informed policy decisions; executing the policies adopted by the board; executing BBI’s current strategic plan; coordinating quarterly, and other, board meetings.

Agency Partners and Collaborations. The GM is responsible for communicating to agencies and organizations that we partner with to represent BBI’s interests  and seek opportunities for collaboration and/or utilizing shared resources.

 

Qualifications

  • At minimum, a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, public media, communications, journalism, public relations or a related field, and at least 4-years of experience in radio and television broadcasting.
  • Experience in effective fiscal/financial management.
  • Experience in effective personnel management.
  • Ability to develop long range funding, technical and programming plans.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to understand the unique circumstances and needs of rural Alaskans.
