Summary of Duties:

The Broadcast Engineer is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of 10 radio and three television broadcast systems, and associated radio and television studios in support of Northwest Public Broadcasting (NWPB) East Operations and the Edward R. Murrow College of Communications. The position also occasionally assists other NWPB engineering team members in support of the remaining 25 stations across Washington and Oregon, under direction of the Engineering Manager. This position bears the responsibility for maintaining studio-to-transmitter links, satellite downlinks, EAS, telemetry systems and various other broadcast-related components to meet QOS standards and current FCC guidelines.

The complex systems include (but not limited to): IPbased radio and television studios, FM, HD (digital FM), and AM radio transmission, high-definition television studios, digital television transport, satellite uplinks and downlinks, emergency standby power configurations, central routing and processing infrastructure, and related computer-based monitoring and control.

The position occasionally travels to support system wide initiatives across Washington State, Idaho, and Oregon. The position must independently work at a distance to manage broadcast facilities, and to supervise technical staff. The position must have proven experience with, and a demonstrated understanding of, work performed by supervised staff in order to provide effective instruction and training, documentation, creation and modification of operating systems and to lead team projects with staff from other areas. Workload, resources, projects, or other priorities may vary the position’s duties to meet objectives of the college.

 

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in broadcast and/or microwave/tower construction, maintenance and design, which has included at least one (1) year of supervisory experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Possession of appropriate licensing required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite.

  • Experience working as a member of a diverse team under deadline constraints.

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain at time of hire, a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.

  • Must complete a cold weather orientation course within 3 months of hire.

  • Must complete a general first aid course within 3 months of hire.

  • Must complete an RFR radiation hazards course within 3 months of hire.

  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, occasionally travel, drive long distances, and occasionally work outside normal business hours.

 

Monthly Salary:

$5,456.55 - $5,635.88 | Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
