Job Description:

Night Editor, Digital (Remote)

Full-time, Regular

Reports to: Managing Editor, Digital

ABOUT THE ROLE

As our Night Editor, Digital, you will manage the weeknight posting of the PBS NewsHour broadcast and associated program segments to the PBS NewsHour website, social and audio platforms. Additionally, you may assist in posting breaking news and AP articles. You will work closely with the Managing Editor and Video Production Assistant and manage communication with the larger NewsHour team about the status of the night’s deliverables. Additionally, you may be called on to contribute to special coverage and long-term projects.

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

You’ll jump right into learning all about how we produce the show for the web and other platforms, working closely with producers and editors to navigate and manage the process. You will join editorial meetings and gain insight into how decisions are made about broadcast and digital content, and how pieces on each platform come together. You will learn how to work ahead on tape pieces and write more quickly to package live segments. You get an understanding of our audience metrics on each platform and how we are targeting those audiences through our copy. You will likely already be noticing trends and proposing experiments in how and when we reach our audiences with our nightly show content.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You’re able to write quickly and effectively so that our show and segments – on all platforms – cut to the heart of the piece and capture the audience’s attention. You regularly engage with broadcast producers and editors on forward planning, and communicate with social producers and digital editors on testing new approaches to our broadcast pieces on site and on our platforms. You can communicate quickly and effectively under pressure and with time can also take on other editing duties across digital.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Strong news judgment, writing and copy editing skills, including mastery of AP style and SEO.
  • Fluency with common CMS web publishing systems, blogging, social media, and image sharing tools, as well as website analytics software.
  • Project management skills with ability to balance and manage multiple priorities on a nightly basis.
  • Ability to analyze work flow and technology and work with others to reshape processes and tools to attain more efficiency.

Proof of full dosage of a COVID-19 vaccination is required for all positions that will be working onsite, or may reasonably or occasionally be called to work onsite.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Comprehensive and competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Generous 403(B) employer match
  • Free parking
  • Holiday and paid leave programs
  • Tuition reimbursement
