Reports to: Senior Executive Producer, NewsHour Productions

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our Senior Producer is a new role that will contributes to all parts of NewsHour Productions, including the nightly evening news program, the weekend news program, the weekly politics analysis program and the digital platforms. In this role will oversee and/or produce segments for the news broadcasts on a wide variety of newsworthy topics. In addition, you will be the primary back up for several key leadership roles: Executive Producer of Weekend NewsHour, Senior Coordinating News Producer, Line Producer and Digital Senior Editor. As our Senior Producer you will help coordinate between the weekday and weekend programs, help plan ahead and supervise and contribute content, to ensure smooth workflow, information sharing and the highest editorial standards.
 

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

You’ll get to know your colleagues and the wider organization. You will become familiar with the specific workflows for several senior leadership positions for which you will also serve as primary replacement, including EP of Washington Week, EP of PBS News Weekend, Senior Coordinating News Producer, Coordinating Line Producer and Digital Senior Editor. You will contribute editorial ideas and take on producing and/or supervising segments, as well as editing scripts for broadcast and writing anchor copy. You will coordinate closely with the Senior EP of NewsHour, the EP’s of PBS News Weekend and Washington Week to ensure planning and communication across the week runs smoothly to maximize available resources and provide the deliver the best possible reporting and content.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You’re able to wear many hats in our dynamic newsroom, including producing individual segments and supervising others, editing scripts and anchor copy for air, working in the live control room and the assignment desk for all three of the NewsHour Production broadcasts and digital. You will bring forward editorial ideas and forward-planning to ensure communication and coordination among these platforms is smooth. You will demonstrate ease with a flexible schedule that will include the majority of your weeks in the year on a Wednesday-Sunday schedule and, as possible, some weeks on a Monday-Friday schedule, as coordinated with the Senior Executive Producer. You will provide editorial excellence, meticulous supervision, and creative and collaborative spirit to everything you do for the newsroom.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Strong editorial judgement, experience in senior leadership with broadcast and digital outlets.
  • Experience managing multiple editorial and production staff.
  • Excellent broadcast writing and video production skills.
  • Experience editing and creating digital content and copy for online and social platforms. Meticulous online text editing skills and experience.
  • Experience covering breaking news and producing news feature segments on a wide variety of topics, in the field and in studio.
  • Exceptional planning and time management skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in journalism, both broadcast and digital experience, preferably at a national outlet.

Proof of full dosage of a COVID-19 vaccination is required for all positions that will be working onsite, or may reasonably or occasionally be called to work onsite.
