Assistant Programming Manager

The Programming Manager is a key member of the Programming team, serving as the RMPBS liaison between independent producers, Programming, and internal stakeholders (especially teams from DEI, Content, Radio, Membership, Corporate Partnerships, Traffic, and Creative Services)

The individual is responsible for cultivating relationships with program providers and guiding them through RMPBS expectations and procedures, coordinating deliverables, and maintaining schedules.



  • Assist with TV programming strategy in collaboration with membership, marketing, production, and underwriting teams.
  • Assist with the schedule of television programming in support of station mission objectives and create programming schedule accordingly.
  • Provide guidance regarding any issues that arise, and, when necessary, aid regarding workload and prioritization of responsibilities.
  • In conjunction with Engineering and Production personnel, provide guidance for any emergency situations in master control as needed.
  • Research and review television programming commitments with PBS and other national, regional, and local organizations and make recommendations for changes and new initiatives.
  • Assist with the evaluation and acquisition of new programming for broadcast.
  • Collaborate with membership personnel to set up pledge programming for broadcast in ProTrack during pledge drives.
  • Collaborate with radio and content teams to support Programming
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and software systems relevant to the programming traffic department.
  • Maintain all current programming details (descriptions, rights, media attachments et c...) within scheduling software,
  • Assist with listings, schedule changes, FCC reports, and Nielsen eNames.
  • Assist with departmental budgets, including cost of program acquisition.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.



  • 2 to 4 years of experience in a media programming environment
  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field with experience in a public broadcasting environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity with public television programming
  • Experience negotiating with producers on the subject of deliverables and other matters related to broadcast
  • Experience working to develop and review program content
  • Experience with identifying and evaluating sensitive or problematic material in programs
  • Knowledge of public television guidelines and practices in regard to program distribution is a plus
  • General knowledge of content development and production
  • You have excellent communication and follow-up skills and are capable of working on multiple projects in various stages of production in an extremely fast-paced environment;
  • You display a strong attention to detail and ability to follow through proactively on projects until completion
  • You have the ability to work under stressful circumstances, react to change productively, and handle other duties as assigned
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Understanding of PBS and guidelines and industry practices with respect to broadcast production is desirable



  • Knowledge of programming/traffic and automation software such as ProTrack and Crispin
  • Prior supervisory experience.


  • Familiarity with public media operations and procedures is desirable
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and emergency situations.
  • Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule, including some nights and weekends, as necessary.
  • Passion for public broadcasting and mission-driven content.
  • Ability to achieve constructive problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Critical thinking skills

This position works primarily in office, studio, editing, and/or field environments. This position must be able to work a flexible schedule with occasionally long hours including some evenings and weekends. Must be able to travel throughout the state and beyond, on occasion.
