SDPB is a statewide, joint radio and television network, that is also South Dakota’s NPR and PBS affiliates.

We seek an energetic, organized and goal-focused professional journalist to lead our team of well decorated journalists and interns. This is a high-profile member of the SDPB journalism team who will lead work on a statewide network for a discerning audience that appreciates and supports good local journalism. This position is a leader who pushes our local content to build public trust in journalism and adheres to SDPB's commitment to serve the state with relevant programming and services while upholding core values of integrity, fairness, independence, education, and innovation.

This position plans, researches, writes, records, and edits news features, stories, and full-length documentaries for radio, television, and/or internet program production. The successful incumbent will also oversee the daily assignments and program content of radio/television news staff and adhere to the vision and priorities set by management to execute the plans.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A degree in Journalism, 3-5 years professional editing and news leading experience, and the ability to work with management in developing new and emerging best practices for an evolving multi-media environment. The ability to host programs, assist with on-air fundraising, and help supervise and train our interns is required. Candidate must be able to direct staff in multiple locations across significant distances and must be comfortable with change. Knowledge of the National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting System formats and styles is desired. Television/video experience is also a plus. 

Knowledge of:

  • the practices, principles, aesthetics, and techniques of multi-media programming production;
  • audio and digital video editing;
  • computer operation;
  • FCC rules and regulations;
  • Journalism standards and practices;
  • research and announcing techniques;
  • AP stylebook guidelines;
  • broadcast writing and web presentation; and
  • public broadcasting mission and ethic.  

Ability to: 

  • communicate with a wide variety of personalities and sources;
  • direct the work of subordinate staff;
  • plan, direct and coordinate research;
  • write and edit material for radio, television, web, and other multi-media platforms;
  • determine program needs;
  • prepare project budgets;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • establish and maintain effective work flow techniques for all content producers;
  • operate media production equipment;
  • travel when required; 
  • work a flexible schedule to include occasional nights, weekends, and holidays; and
  • lift fifty pounds. 

This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
