Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public media network whose mission is to strengthen the civic and cultural bonds that unite Southern California's diverse communities by providing the highest quality news and information service on air at 89.3 KPCC, online at LAist.com and through KPCC In Person. Position Summary:

This position is responsible for operating SCPR’s midday programming and local newscasts, including early All Things Considered hosted by Austin Cross. The ideal candidate is passionate about live broadcast, is calm under stressful situations and works well in a complex, fast-breaking news environment. This role also supports all types of other on-air and studio production needs.

 

Compensation:

The pay rate for this opportunity will be no less than $20.76 per hour. Exact pay rate determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

 

Position Responsibility:

  • Connection of program elements for broadcast transmission, VOIP, and various broadcast formats.
  • Verify satellite feeds for digital systems and prep program material for air.
  • Audio processing for Internet streaming.
  • Deep understanding of signal flow, audio routing, mix minus, etc.
  • Feed network play to air systems and ensure integrity of a multi-station network.
  • Calibrate studio sources, maintain audio integrity and coordinate transmission with all studios including Los Angeles and associated bureaus. 
  • Engineer live to air programming and studio bookings for production.
  • Log transmitter readings.
  • Provide technical support for KPCC and affiliates through triage and troubleshooting.
  • Record, edit and mix on air promos and segments for local and network programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Radio Production Associate Degree or Certificate program; FCC General Class License or SBE certification; OR 3+ years equivalent work experience in the broadcast industry.
  • Working knowledge of broadcast news operations and talk show production.
  • Demonstrated ability using studio systems including Axia control boards, mics, and IP codecs, electronic routers and record/playback machines.
  • Operational experience with satellite downlink equipment; RF transmission remote control gear, STL systems and audio processing.
  • Knowledge of digital production systems including audio workstations and automation for “on-air” program delivery.  (Wide Orbit)
  • Computer literate with experience using PC and Mac platforms.
  • Proficiency in ProTools and/or Adobe Audition editing software.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Consistent and reliable attendance a must.

 

Senior Level Skills and Experience:

  • Mix to air midday programming but can also quickly adapt to more challenging weekday KPCC programs including other locally hosted Network News Magazine shows like Morning Edition and locally produced KPCC talk programs. (cross-training provided)
  • Ability to record, edit and mix pre-taped segments for broadcast. Adobe Audition or ProTools experience a must.
  • Deep level understanding and operation of KPCC’s digital audio storage and delivery system (Wide Orbit) and AXIA consoles.
  • Ability to lead coordination of set-up, execution and tear down of all types of remote broadcasts and tapings as well as Forum events.
  • Train operation and production staff on a variety of technical procedures including, mixing, recording, digital editing and automation systems.
  • Fill in on any shift when needed.
