TITLE: Morning Edition/Fronteras Producer

REPORTS TO: News Director

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

SUMMARY: Texas Public Radio is seeking a producer to provide support to our Morning Edition host by writing and editing news and promotional content for use during daily broadcasts, and assisting with the production of audio elements, and also contribute to the production of our weekly Fronteras program.  This producer will exercise creative and editorial control in the creation of scripts and production of audio elements.  The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, resourceful, self-starter, with strong time management and critical thinking skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contributes to the production and development of TPR’s Morning Edition broadcasts by exercising creative and editorial judgment in writing and editing news and promotional copy, and planning on-air breaks with host's input. 

Obtains news and promotional audio for host use in Morning Edition. 

Works in coordination with digital staff to make sure TPR’s digital products are updated weekday mornings.

Performs news reporting duties by generating ideas and exercising creative and editorial judgment in the gathering, writing, editing and producing of original radio news stories and feature reports for air on Texas Public Radio using a variety of sources.

Performs substitute news anchor duties by hosting on-air shifts as scheduled by the News Director. Creates original on-air content or creatively adapts existing material as needed.

Gathers daily story ideas for the TPR Newsroom as a strong participant in TPR’s daily editorial meeting.

Contributes to the production and development of TPR’s weekly Fronteras program.  Helps in the gathering of content and organization of the program.

Performs other related duties, such as providing assistance with other TPR-produced programs, as assigned by the News Director.

Participates appropriately in station fundraising and sponsorship activities and live events.

 

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent experience.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least 1 year of journalism experience, preferably in a broadcast setting.

 

SKILLS

Must be comfortable anchoring live broadcasts.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Word.

Must be proficient in digital audio software such as Adobe Audition, SoundForge, Audacity.

Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, and a critical ear.

Must have exceptional time management and personal relationship skills.

Must have valid standard Class C driver’s license.

Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Finger Dexterity: Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or picking up small objects.

Talking: Frequently conveying detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, clearly, or quickly.

Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

Repetitive Motions: Frequently and regularly using the wrists, hands, and fingers.

Visual: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or other materials.

Physical: Sedentary work; sitting most of the time.  May have to lift folders, files, papers,  boxes, audio/video equipment, and other such items weighing up to approximately 25 lbs.
