Job Summary:

WSUM Madison Student Radio is seeking an innovative and self-motivated engineer to oversee its technical operations. The Engineering Supervisor is responsible for maintaining WSUM's FM operations and streaming capabilities, including studios and a tower site. WSUM is a student-led radio station which aspires to further expand its multimedia capabilities. This position plays a crucial role in the station's growth and we are seeking someone who will be adept at maintaining existing infrastructure while embracing new technologies. The successful candidate will value problem solving and bring patience and creativity to the job.

Responsibilities:

Assists with the direction and coordination of activities related to acquisition, installation, and maintenance of studio, broadcasting, and IT equipment and infrastructure. Establishes procedures for operation of equipment to ensure performance meets standards of quality and rules and regulations set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

- 10% Assists in determining strategic goals, planning, management, and supervision of the unit to ensure high quality media production and delivery

- 5% Serves as a point of contact during disaster recovery or situations requiring urgent attention

- 20% Makes recommendations and manages projects related to broadcast and IT equipment acquisition, installation, maintenance, and workflow procedures

- 20% Works as Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) or lead engineer, leads production planning and execution, including set-up and operation of technical production equipment

- 5% Advises and assists with budgetary planning and purchasing

- 15% Advises and assists with long-range technical facilities projects and plans

- 20% Serves as subject matter expert and a point of contact to internal and external stakeholders

- 5% May supervise the day-to-day activities of unit staff including training, evaluation, and resolution of personnel issues

Required Qualifications:

- 3-5 years experience in digital technology for broadcast and/or production.

- Familiarity with the infrastructure of an FM radio station, including studio equipment and software, a tower site, high power FM transmission systems, and AoIP systems.

- Demonstrated knowledge of server-based and broadcast IT infrastructure.

- Adaptability to new technologies and ability to implement them effectively.

- Ability to work patiently and diligently with college undergraduate students.

- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

- Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one.

- Ability to respond to broadcast and technical emergencies outside of regularly scheduled business hours, including those which require travel to WSUM studio and tower locations.

- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and carry equipment short distances.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Project management experience.

- Basic understanding of electronic equipment and ability to troubleshoot.

- Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.

- Society of Broadcast Engineers certification.

Education:

H.S. Diploma required. Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree preferred. Fields of engineering, computer science, communications/media, journalism a plus. Equivalent professional experience is also considered.

Full Time: 100% 

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary

Starting salary for this position is $65,000 - $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.

WSUM is the University of Wisconsin-Madison's student-run radio station. With over 200 volunteers and award-winning programming, the station is a leader in the college media landscape. WSUM provides music, talk, news and live sports programming through 24/7/365 broadcast on its FM signal, as well as three internet radio streams. WSUM also offers downloadable podcasts, a mobile app, website, YouTube channel, and social media platforms.

WSUM is managed by a professional Director of Student Radio and a student executive management team under the guidance of a Governance Board consisting of faculty, staff and students, as well as representatives from the Associated Students of Madison (ASM). WSUM is supported by funds from the Student Services Finance Committee (SSFC) of the Associated Students of Madison and by the Friends Madison Student Radio (FoMSR). WSUM is part of UW-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
