Summary

This position writes and edits spot and feature news stories for on air and digital delivery. 

Primary Duties

  1. Research, write, voice, produce, and edit daily spot and/or feature news stories for on air and digital platforms.
  2. Serve as backup anchor of local newscasts during Morning Edition, Mid-Day West Michigan, and All Things Considered.
  3. Update station website with local news stories.
  4. Represent WGVU Public Media at station-sponsored events and host/co-host programs or events as needed.
  5. Assist in on air fundraising efforts.
  6. Performs other duties as required/assigned by leadership.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Associate's Degree and three (3) years of newsroom or related experience - OR - Bachelors' Degree and one (1) year of newsroom or related experience.
  • Experience in field news gathering including impromptu and scripted interview settings.
  • Knowledge of digital audio editing and studio production including the ability to operate the digital radio board, playback/automation system, and general broadcast equipment and software.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Commitment to WGVU's vision of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work within a collaborative multi-platform culture and environment.

  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including some nights and weekends, and holidays.
  • Willingness to work on location for field recordings and have a valid driver's license..

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office and broadcast studio environment, but candidates should be prepared for occasional work on location as travel may be required. At times, candidates may be required to appear on WGVU Public Media for fundraising and promotional announcements or events.
