WSKG Public Media is seeking an experienced leader to join our Senior Leadership team. The Chief Content Officer will lead content creation and distribution across our WSKG TV, Radio, Digital, and News platforms, providing vision, executional oversight. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Primary Function:
The Chief Content Officer (CCO) oversees ongoing WSKG TV, Radio, Digital, and News operations and leads content creation and distribution across those platforms. A member of the WSKG Senior Leadership Team, the CCO has overall responsibility for an integrated team in multi-media content, interactive media, broadcast traffic and video production. In addition, this position serves as the Executive Producer for all locally produced content and ensures all content is aligned with WSKG’s mission, vision and strategy while also meeting WSKG’s Editorial Standards and Practices.
Content Strategy and Execution:
1. Lead the acquisition, curation, development, creation and evaluation of all general audience programs and other content for broadcast television channels, radio, and digital platforms.
2. Work with the content team to ensure that WSKG’s content is platform-agnostic, highly relevant, and locally focused, while also engaging viewers and expanding audiences.
3. Position WSKG as the recognized regional leader for the quality, scope and depth of its journalism and local content. Develop metrics to realize & sustain this position.
4. Set and maintain quality standards for programming and content on all platforms.
- Ensure compliance with FCC, CPB, PBS, NPR, and other reporting requirements, as well as rights management of produced and acquired content.
- Work closely with the President & CEO, Director of Marketing & Community Engagement, Community Advisory Board, and other station departments to deepen WSKG’s connection to its audience and community through locally produced content.
- Utilize data and analytics to monitor use and viewership, audience satisfaction, and develop audience optimization strategies.
- Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to develop a content distribution strategy that optimizes WSKG’s broadcast, streaming, web, and social channels to enhance the user experience across all platforms, and drive audience/viewer/visitor growth and connection.
- Work with the Director of Operations and Chief Engineer to identify the technology and infrastructure requirements to achieve the content creation and distribution strategies.
10. Stay abreast of innovations and trends in technology and consumer consumption of media including digital delivery systems and new distribution platforms.
Management:
1. Lead the creation of annual budgets for WSKG TV, Radio, Digital and News.
2. Builds, develops, trains, and supervises a creative, energetic, mission-driven, team-oriented content, operations, and programming staff and, as appropriate, oversees the work of contractors and others.
3. Lead annual and long-term content vision planning to achieve audience growth and meet service goals.
4. Foster a learning environment, ensuring staff have opportunities to learn from others and that learning is shared to benefit others in the division.
- Develop and maintain a positive, diverse, creative, high-performance culture.
- Foster collaboration across WSKG departments to facilitate support for content.
- Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and meet audience goals and other key business objectives.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
· Has at least ten years of content and engagement leadership experience in a media environment or other organizations that share the WSKG commitment to community.
· Is an experienced, mission-driven leader who understands how dramatically media is changing and can use their experience to continue to lead WSKG through the transformation.
· Has knowledge of interactive media, publishing, and other electronic information and emerging communication technologies.
· Is technologically competent, comfortable with, and aware of digital and social media, able to keep us abreast and increasingly effective with all different platforms and community engagement.
· Supervisory/management experience is required – must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire, and lead.
· Has experience with and knowledge of the ethics and practices of journalism, as well a commitment to and knowledge of the laws and policies affecting its practice.
· Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
