POSITION: CITY Magazine Editor

REPORTS TO: Executive Editor, WXXI News

SUMMARY: WXXI News is seeking an editor to lead CITY Magazine, a monthly magazine and digital site, devoted to covering arts, music, news, life and culture in the city of Rochester and its suburbs.

The CITY editor will supervise a team of editors and reporters and be responsible for the content management, growth, and strategic vision of the publication and its digital presence.

The ideal candidate is audience-focused, collaborative and energetic, capable of leading with integrity and humility, has a deep contact list of freelance reporters and photographers, and has a finger on the pulse of local issues, particularly in the arts and cultural scenes of the Finger Lakes region.

The CITY editor will work closely with the entire WXXI News editorial team to publish content that speaks to the magazine’s diverse audience and embraces readers’ needs, values and social differences.

The CITY editor will also work in concert with the production and marketing arms of the magazine to ensure timely delivery of the magazine and the publication of special sections that anchor the editorial theme of each monthly issue.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – TIME ON TASK

EDITORIAL FUNCTIONS – 70%

Set the editorial agenda for CITY through management of its editors and freelancers, and conceive, assign, edit, and report content that speaks to the CITY audience, including newsletters and calendars.

Cultivate and manage a dependable bank of freelance reporters and photographers who can produce content in a timely fashion for the magazine.

Work in concert with CITY’s production and marketing arms to ensure the timely publication schedule of special sections and related content.

Communicate effectively with the WXXI News digital content manager for news to arrange for the online publication of CITY content on the CITY website and/or WXXI News website.

Keep abreast of trends in arts and culture reporting and print publications similar in scope to CITY.

COLLABORATIVE FUNCTIONS – 20%

Coordinate with CITY’s production and marketing teams to enhance the brand and grow revenue and audience.

Develop strong community relationships and forge partnerships where appropriate.

Represent the CITY and WXXI brands at national and local events.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS – 10%

Appear on air as needed (radio and television).

Additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Have previous reporting experience and a solid foundation in journalism ethics. A degree in journalism and/or communications is preferred.
• At least five years of experience as an editor or publisher.
• Outstanding presentation and oral and written communication skills.
• The ability to be omnipresent in the Greater Rochester community, specifically the city’s arts and cultural and dining scenes.
• A well-organized self-starter who can multitask.
• A commitment to high-quality local journalism.
• Possess style, flair, and a sense of humor.
