Journalism Collaboration: Sharing America

KWMU/St. Louis (lead station), KCUR/Kansas City, WNPR/Hartford and OPB/Portland are collaborating to diversify news coverage, audience and staff. This project to model diversity in hiring and reporting, formerly titled Improving Diversity in Public Media Newsrooms: A Collaborative Approach, includes diversity training for newsrooms and news managers. The St. Louis-based editor guides four reporters to produce in-depth stories and multi-part series focusing on race, ethnicity and culture. In addition to joint reporting projects, each reporter is producing at least 36 multimedia stories, and engaging with diverse communities through events, social media, listening posts and/or podcasts. The station partners will document and share the project’s processes at journalism conferences.
