Public Media Claims 43 RTDNA National Edward R. Murrow Awards
August 20, 2024
Public media news organizations won 43 National Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2024, which were bestowed by the Radio Television Digital News Association for outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism. NPR led with eight awards in the Network Radio categories, as public radio stations dominated the Small Market and Large Market categories, claiming 27 of the 32 awards.
Winning reporting ran the gamut, from an NPR interview with an Iraqi man describing the lasting impact of being held at the Abu Ghraib prison to Maine Public’s breaking news about the Lewiston mass shooting to an Alaska Public Media feature on Dale Marshall, the pumpkin-growing king of the Alaska State Fair.
FRONTLINE won two awards, for its Oscar-winning documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” a partnership with the Associated Press, and “Inside the Uvalde Response,” a partnership with ProPublica and the Texas Tribune. Wisconsin PBS won two awards in the small market television category, for "Wisconsin in Black & White," a look at systemic racism in Wisconsin, and "Jack the Magnificent," a feature story on a miniature horse who brings joy to residents in Eau Claire.
“These awards affirm the excellence of public media's fact-based journalism, both locally and nationally, and the value of public media to an informed and engaged citizenry,” said Kathy Merritt, CPB senior vice president, Radio, Journalism and CSG Services. “This reporting demonstrates public media's longstanding commitment to serving their communities, and CPB is proud to help make this reporting possible.”
Winners will be honored at an October 14 gala in New York City.
