President and CEO of CPB
1992-1997

We will long remember with gratitude Ambassador Carlson, the former president and CEO of CPB, whose contributions to public media were far-ranging, and whose leadership during challenging times left a lasting impact.

A former Peabody Award-winning journalist, Voice of America director, and ambassador to the Seychelles, Ambassador Carlson became CEO of CPB in 1992 and tackled difficult issues including efficiency, station infrastructure, financial management, and objectivity and balance. A decisive leader, he made difficult but necessary choices to meet the challenges of his time.

The CPB Board of Directors marks Ambassador Carlson’s leadership, vision, and service to public media and the American public with deep respect and appreciation, and offers our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends
