Job Description Summary

The Morning Host works under the supervision of the Content Director. This position hosts daily, local newscasts and breaks during the broadcast of NPR’s Morning Edition and delivers the WFDD Noon Newscast. The Morning Host uses solid news judgment to identify news topics of importance to a 32-county region, writes and re-writes copy and scripts for clear delivery and ease of understanding for radio and online audiences. The Morning Host also might be asked to produce spot news as well as in-depth radio features and special reports as assigned for broadcast and/or online platforms.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Hosting (85%) – Hosts local breaks during NPR’s Morning Edition and the rest of the morning shows; also anchors the noon newscast and may be asked to host programs, special coverage, or modules.

  • Reporting (10%) - Selects and researches topics; contacts and interviews sources; maintains notes and audio recordings; writes and edits reports; produces and voices reports for on-air and online. Posts all stories to WFDD website. As appropriate, posts to NCPRA shared news site on Content Depot.  Uses station Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter (X) accounts to promote stories and interact with audience.

  • Administrative (5%) - The Morning Host is responsible for appropriate record-keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment and other duties as assigned. Also, will be actively involved in station fundraising campaigns and community engagement events.

  • Other  - Adheres to deadlines and, in concert with appropriate staff, makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. The Morning Host works in close concerts with other staff and under the supervision of the Content Director, assisting in identifying, developing, and creating programs that support WFDD ‘s overall mission. Works with college interns in the studio to train them in radio hosting skills.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • A four-year degree or equivalent required. Minimum five years full-time professional experience in broadcast journalism.

  • Must have demonstrated ability to clearly deliver live news reports in a conversational manner.

  • Must have experience in newsgathering, writing, editing, and radio production for short-form and long-form reports.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a live broadcast environment in compliance with FCC regulations.

  • Displays knowledge of and adherence to high ethical standards.

  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent writing, grammar, and spelling skills.

  • Must have a memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under pressure and juggle  simultaneous tasks.

  • Ability to travel, as required.

  • Valid driver license with good driving record. Must be insurable.

  • Skills required also include on-line research, word processing, digital editing, operation of studio mixers/boards and equipment, and operation of light office equipment.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience in a public radio news environment preferred.

  • Possesses a broad knowledge of local and regional issues.

  • Web posting and social media experience.

  • Experience with on-air news delivery, hosting, and fundraising.

  • Ability to work well both independently and in a group setting.

  • Ability to lift light equipment (approximately 5 pounds).

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary work primarily involves sitting/standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
