The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of current major donors, including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship as well as data analysis and strategy. With the objective of expanding donor capacity, engagement and philanthropy, the Major Gifts Officer creates opportunities for donors to become engaged with CapRadio’s public service mission and connects them with organizational programs and initiatives that align with their giving interests.

Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Development, this position collaborates with the larger Membership, Development and Marketing teams, in addition to other departments across the organization. The ideal candidate will be a curious, independent self-starter that can effectively collaborate with others to achieve individual and organizational fundraising targets. Candidates with a background in development and fundraising, as well as membership programs, who also have experience creating communications strategies and implementing stewardship are preferred. Attention to detail, effective project management skills and experience with CRM systems and databases are key qualities for this position. Strong speaking and writing skills are critical. Familiarity with major gifts programs and public media fundraising, in addition to NPR and CapRadio’s local news and music offerings, is highly desirable.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Qualify assigned major donors for a portfolio of 150+, and is expected to spend 80% of time on the cultivation of these donors. Stewards the remaining major donors assigned who are outside of the portfolio. Both cultivation and stewardship efforts (planned touchpoints, prompt thanking and timely, relevant solicitations) are expected to meet annual income and donor retention goals defined in the annual development plan.
  • Match major donors’ passions and interests with organizational programs and initiatives, including opportunities for on-air and other recognition, to retain donors and increase year-over-year giving. Acquires commitments involving recognition through signed gift agreements.
  • Manage relationships using multiple channels, including phone, email, personal mail, Zoom and face-to-face meetings, in addition to engaging them through consistent stewardship and active cultivation to increase the donor’s support, achieve revenue goals and enhance the donor experience.
  • Update donor database with donor touchpoints (such as phone calls, email, personal mail, Zoom and face-to-face meetings) along with updated information about donors to support the station’s long term station relationship with the donor.
  • Work with senior Development leadership on the creation of new recognition opportunities, proposals and gift agreements to help elevate donor giving in support of CapRadio.
  • Advise on activities or opportunities for face-to-face engagement with donors, such as at CapRadio in-person programs and events, to support major donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with Development and Marketing staff on the creation of donor benefits in accordance with levels of giving, to provide incentives for deeper donor investment.
  • Support membership fundraising campaigns (spring, fall, calendar year end, fiscal year end, Big Day of Giving, etc.) by encouraging select assigned donors to contribute.
  • Grow legacy giving among donors within portfolio.
  • Provide weekly report to supervisor on previous week’s activities and anticipated tasks for upcoming week.
  • Collaborate with the Development, Membership, Mid-Level Giving and Marketing teams, as well as other departments, to achieve broader revenue goals and strengthen the organization by removing silos.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Speak and write clearly and effectively.
  • Think strategically and creatively.
  • Create and implement a personal strategic plan for reaching annual fundraising goals, while being flexible in response to changing circumstances and needs at the station, in donors’ lives and in the world.
  • Be sensitive to donors’ questions, communication styles and philanthropic interests.
  • Provide prompt follow-through on donor inquiries.
  • Demonstrate persistence in achieving realistic goals.
  • Use donor database Raiser’s Edge CRM to record and glean information on donors understand donor history with the organization.
  • Occasionally travel to individual donors’ homes or a public space (e.g. restaurant for breakfast or lunch) for meetings
  • Balance team and individual responsibilities
  • Five years of previous work with individual donors is preferred.

This role is deemed essential and requires an on-site presence at least 50% of the time. You must be able to commute to our Sacramento, CA office each workday.

Salary

The compensation for this role is $94,000 to $105,000 annually.
