Who we are:

WRCJ 90.9 FM Detroit, Michigan, is an independent, listener-supported public radio station with a classical and jazz music format. The Station broadcasts classical music daily from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and jazz music from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. WRCJ-FM is licensed to the Detroit Classical and Jazz Educational Radio Foundation and is managed by Detroit Public Television. The Station is located inside the Detroit School of Arts in midtown Detroit, and has been broadcasting since 2005.

The Opportunity

We are actively seeking dynamic and diverse team member to join us in the role of Part Time Music Programmer in Detroit, MI, in a hybrid work structure.

The Music Programmer acquires, selects and programs the best classical music for the station with an ear toward reaching the largest possible audience and serving the mission of WRCJ-FM. The Music Programmer also helps curate the WRCJ music library.

Essential Functions

  • Acquire, select and program daily classical music; review new recordings for inclusion in the playlist; create daily playlists.
  • Program music tied to events and dates, such as composer birthdays, Holidays, etc.
  • Communicate with all staff members in advance of special music programming to maximize broadcast, email and social media promotion.
  • Research and gain knowledge of classical and jazz music to facilitate speaking knowledgeably with unscripted analysis and commentary.
  • Other duties as assigned, including participation in station fundraising events.

Skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational ability with strong attention to details.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and budgets and meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional knowledge of classical music.
  • Bachelor’s degree in art, music, communication or similar discipline preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in the broadcast or classical music industry.
  • 5+ years of experience using Music Master, Audio Vault, and other computer systems.
  • Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion for arts and culture in the local community.
  • On-air fundraising experience with the ability to fundraise on pledge drives.

Physical Demands

Individual must be able to:

  • Individual must be able to type, and sit behind a desk for extended periods of time.
