Position Summary:

All Things Considered (ATC) is the second most listened-to national radio program in America. It is NPR’s first news program, launched on May 3, 1971. LAist airs ATC from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and again from 4:00pm to 6:30pm. This position is for the early ATC midday airing.

 

The ATC host plays the critical role as a Southern California guide for audiences, connecting NPR’s national and international coverage with local news and information. The LAist ATC midday host must deeply understand greater Los Angeles and Southern California to anchor local newscasts and breaks and conduct newsmaker interviews. The host must work closely with the daily news and program production teams to do so. In addition to shaping interviews and newscasts, the host will create promotional material and contribute live elements for the broadcast and digital audience. The host will also represent LAist online, via social media, and at community events in Southern California, promoting the station and website, membership, and community involvement. ATC host is one of LAist’s highest-profile positions on and off the air. The midday host will contribute significantly to LAist’s overall sound and style.

 

Compensation: The salary for this opportunity will be no less than $122,000 annualized and no more than $125,000 annualized. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, budget and internal equity.

 

Position Responsibility:

  • Act as a newsroom leader. Work effectively and collaboratively with people across the content division including news leadership, editors, producers, engineers, programming, social media, marketing, and membership
  • Research, write and deliver on-air and digital news.
  • Conduct live and recorded interviews. 
  • Writes intros, promos and scripts.
  • Provide smooth transitions between national and local programming.
  • Deliver seamless live, non-scripted material without warning.
  • Present news, traffic, and weather reports, along with station promotion, etc.
  • Develop a significant digital and social media presence.  Utilize various social media platforms to share content, connect with audiences, and promote LAist.
  • Deliver timely, relevant content for daily on-demand products.
  • Participate in the promotion of LAist, including public appearances, fundraising activities and other events. 
  • Serves as a public representative for LAist at community events in Southern California, and actively promote the organization and membership via community engagement activity.
  • Participate in hosting and producing LAist video content, during live broadcasts or other relevant distribution of video, including television appearances or on social media.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of full-time daily radio news anchoring, hosting and/or reporting.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated high quality broadcast and digital hosting skills.
  • Engaging, energetic and conversational on-air presence.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to edit rough news copy on tight deadlines.
  • Deep knowledge of news and strong news judgment.
  • Ability to take complex, detailed information and summarize it into a condensed, easy to understand form.
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and present information to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to do live reports and host two-ways interviews at expert level.
  • Ability to handle rapidly moving and breaking news stories.
  • Knowledge of digital journalism practices.
  • Fluency in digital, social media and blogs.
  • Experience building a personality presence in social media.
  • Ability to work well with others including the production team and be open to coaching.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm about ways to bring new listeners to the station.
  • Understands and complies with FCC Broadcast Regulations.
  • Knowledge of media and the public media system including its stations and audience composition; a listener to public media.
  • Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA by the thirtieth (30th) day of employment.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Digital audio production experience.
  • Additional language skills, such as Spanish, Mandarin, etc.
  • Public speaking, presentation and emcee skills.
  • Broadcast and digital fundraising skills.
