About Our Agency:
South Carolina ETV (SCETV) is the state's public educational broadcasting network. SCETV amplifies South Carolina voices, provides educational experiences, and strengthens communities while working to create a stronger, more connected, and informed South Carolina. SCETV provides national and local content to classrooms via internet services Knowitall.org and PBS Learning Media. SCETV also provides teacher training and re-certification in face-to-face and online settings. 

JOB PURPOSE: 
Using the highest journalistic standards, this position leads the entire news initiative for SCETV and South Carolina Public Radio, including reporting for broadcast, digital, social media, streaming and on-demand platforms. Through supervision of the news team, this position provides the leadership necessary to guide daily, breaking, and investigative reporting, as well as special assignments. Serving as the assignment editor, the Director of News aligns deliverables through an editorial calendar, provides consistent editorial feedback, develops news coverage plans, and monitors news sources. Supports interdepartmental collaboration to ensure efficient newsroom operations, coverage of pertinent topics/activities, and integration of news department into overall agency planning.

JOB DUTIES:
Sets the editorial news vision for the SCETV/SCPR statewide newsroom. Develops and maintains editorial policies. Monitors and ensures all news content adheres to high broadcast/digital journalistic standards. Leads daily and long-term planning for news, including how stories are covered and how they are distributed to our audience via SCETV’s various platforms. Supports special news-related projects. Aligns deliverables through an editorial calendar and provides editorial feedback to the news team. Leads collaborative journalism efforts between SCETV/SCPR and external news partners, fostering audience
engagement and impact through compelling and relevant news coverage. Serves as an integral member of the team, representing the newsroom and contributing to overall organizational strategy. Develops, directs, administers and monitors newsroom budget and related functions.
Leads recruiting, hiring, retention, and partnership efforts that aim to build and sustain a newsroom workforce reflecting the demographic profile of the state. Supervises news staff, uses judgment and strong journalism ethics to guide daily, breaking, and investigative reporting. Teaches, coaches, and mentors the entire news team in best practices for writing and producing content. Fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment where team members feel empowered to innovate, experiment, and learn from each other. Contributes to a culture of excellence and ongoing professional growth.

Stays up to date on the latest news and trends in the industry and incorporates them into the agency’s editorial strategy. Leads and supports use of the identified news management systems (e.g., News Boss) with staff and collaborators. Edits both audio and web stories for clear, factual, concise, and fair reporting that adheres to the highest journalistic standards. Reviews all news content to ensure quality control and brand compliance. Works closely with Production and Engineering staff to ensure high quality broadcast/distribution of programming. Select operation of production equipment, as needed. Collaborates with Communications to skillfully use social media and digital tools to research, discover, and distribute news content.

Actively participates in organizational strategy discussions and initiatives, particularly in fostering the growth of local news through partnerships, grants, and other opportunities. Champions the value of local news and public media through strategic initiatives such as on-air membership drives, grant writing support, and community outreach efforts. Leverages persuasive messaging and storytelling to engage audiences and emphasize the importance of supporting local news and public media. Supports sustainability efforts and increases stakeholder confidence in the agency’s ability to deliver high-quality news coverage to the
community.

Develops and enforces editorial policies and guidelines that prioritize transparency, integrity, and accountability in news reporting. Provides guidance and training to newsroom staff on ethical journalism practices, including the identification and handling of sensitive or controversial topics. Collaborates with reporters, editors, and producers to uphold the station's reputation for credibility, impartiality, and trustworthiness.

Act as a liaison between the newsroom and senior management to communicate and address any ethical issues or challenges that may arise. Stay informed about industry standards and best practices for ethical journalism and implement necessary updates or changes to ensure compliance. Serves as a public advocate for the station's commitment to ethical journalism, engaging with viewers, community stakeholders, and industry partners to build and maintain trust. Conducts regular evaluations and assessments of news.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor’s degree and experience in a professional radio/television setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in journalism and ten years relevant experience in journalism/news including public broadcasting television production, or an equivalent combination education, training and experience. Public TV experience preferred or experience working in a managerial role within a news agency.
