TITLE:                                 Assistant Broadcast Engineer                                   

DEPARTMENT:             Technology & Operations

REPORTS TO:               VP of Engineering
CLASSIFICATION:    Full-time, exempt

 

SUMMARY:  Texas Public Radio (TPR) is a mission-driven, award-winning multimedia organization serving hundreds of thousands of listeners through seven radio stations across Texas. TPR delivers top-quality content via radio broadcast, video and audio streaming, digital networks, and live events, collaborating with other media organizations to produce rich content and programming.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Assistant Broadcast Engineer to manage and maintain seven transmitter sites throughout Central and South Texas, provide technical support to studios, offer IT support, and assist in facility maintenance.  This role presents an exciting opportunity for a passionate broadcast engineer to contribute to a public radio station dedicated to serving diverse communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and maintain seven transmitter sites across Central and South Texas.
  • Conduct routine inspections, troubleshoot issues, and perform repairs to ensure optimal transmitter performance.
  • Collaborate with external vendors for equipment procurement, installations, and upgrades.
  • Provide technical support for on-air and production studios, promptly resolving technical issues.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of broadcast equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Optimize audio quality and ensure smooth broadcast operations by collaborating with programming and production teams.
  • Offer comprehensive IT support to staff, addressing hardware and software issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with the IT department to implement and maintain network infrastructure securely and reliably.
  • Stay updated on technological advancements and recommend upgrades for efficiency.
  • Support facility maintenance, including HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Coordinate with external contractors for specialized maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations to maintain a secure working environment.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 emergency support.
  • Update wiring, labeling, and documentation to current standards.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations to protect broadcasting licenses.
  • Participate in station fundraising, sponsorship activities, and live events.
  • Fulfill administrative obligations related to documentation and expense reports.

 

EDUCATION: 

Associate degree in electronics technology or related field, or equivalent experience in operations or maintenance at a broadcast station. SBE Certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 

Minimum of three years technical experience in broadcast station operations preferred.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Professionalism and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work after hours and participate in on-call rotation.
  • Valid Class C driver's license and ability to travel on short notice.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS: 

Familiarity with digital audio storage, automation, and traffic systems.

Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations and telecommunications laws.

IT skills including troubleshooting, networking, and desktop support.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or handling tools.
  • Frequently conveying detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, clearly, and quickly. 
  • Able to hear average or normal conversations in person or by phone. 
  • Frequently and regularly using the wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or other materials.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs., climb ladders, and use power tools.
