Job Description:

Internship – Student Reporting Labs, Communications 

Part time, non-exempt. $15.00/hr.
Fall 2024 (September 9 – December 13)
Reports to: Director, Communications 
Location: Remote/Hybrid 

Description of Intern Work Responsibilities/Projects:

  • Reviewing, formatting and uploading email newsletter communications
  • Drafting announcements, recaps, and/or blog posts for the SRL website
  • Researching prospective partners, collaborators, media distributors, etc.
  • Reporting on SRL’s internal metrics as needed
  • Collaborating with SRL staff to brainstorm and support new ideas, projects, and goal
  • Supporting in-person SRL summer training events for students and educators as needed
  • Assisting with special projects and other duties as assigned            

Learning Objectives:

  • Skill development: Gain practical experience in the fields of communication, journalism, and public media
  • Understanding real-world application: Develop a greater understanding about nonprofit media communication strategies, tools, and workflows
  • Personal Professional Development: Grow communication skills and contribute to team projects while working in a in a professional environment to support journalism capacity-building for high school students and educators

Specific Skills Required:

  • Excellent writing, copy editing, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Creative mindset
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with careful attention to detail
  • Excellent tech platform skills: you feel comfortable learning new systems and are open to using Zoom, Google drive, Slack, AirTable, Outlook, MailChimp, and Canva
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for journalism, youth engagement, and public media
  • An interest in nonprofit communication, events, project management, etc.

Preferred Major:  Journalism, Communications/Marketing, Nonprofit Management, or related field

Location:

WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
