Morning Edition Producer/Reporter

Live and work in southeast Louisiana, one of the most culturally dynamic places in the country. NPR member station WWNO-FM, New Orleans Public Radio (in newsroom collaboration with WRKF Baton Rouge), seeks a Morning Edition Producer/Reporter to join our award-winning regional newsroom.  The Morning Edition Producer/Reporter will write and edit news stories for use in WWNO and WRKF newscasts during NPR’s Morning Edition. Additional responsibilities include coordinating with the Morning Edition local host to plan, book, and edit interviews and other recorded news pieces; working with the News Director to define the nature and style of WWNO and WRKF broadcast newscast stories; recording news stories and periodic newscasts when needed; and serving as emergency backup host for Morning Edition. The start time for the shift will generally be 5 AM, but hours may change (temporarily or permanently) depending on daily news requirements and without notice.  The position is based in New Orleans and may require occasional travel. The Morning Edition Producer/Reporter reports to the News Director.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Participate in weekly and as scheduled editorial meetings
- Write original newscast stories for Morning Edition each day
- Edit and/or update existing stories for timeliness, clarity, and accuracy
- Acquire sound from news-makers for use in that day’s Morning Edition and other newscasts
- Assist the Morning Edition host/newscaster with setting the rundown for each cast
- Provide production support to the Morning Edition host/newscaster as needed
- File a mix of short form and long form general assignment reports
- Rearrange the content of NPR’s Morning Edition during on-air fundraising periods to allow for sufficient local pitching time, as well as being assigned occasional on-air fundraising pitch shifts
- Serve as a backup host for Morning Edition
- Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field or equivalent experience
- Two years full-time professional experience in journalism or comparable experience.

- Excellent speaking, writing and editing skills
- Experience in broadcast
- Experience using social media to promote and find stories

Preferred:
- Experience producing audio dailies/features for radio
- Previous experience producing for a news magazine or news show.

- Hosting experience
- Public radio experience
